1902Horticultural Division was established at the National Agricultural Research Station, Okitsu, Shizuoka.1921
Imperial Horticultural Experiment Station was established as an independent institute at the same location.1951
Laboratory of Flower Breeding was founded at Kyushu Agricultural Experiment Station, Kurume, Fukuoka.1958
Laboratory of Flower Cultivation was founded at National Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Hiratsuka, Kanagawa.1973
Vegetable and Ornamental Crops Research Station (VOCRS) was established at Tsu, Mie. Floricultural research was carried out in five laboratories at Tsu, Taketoyo (Aichi), and Kurume.1981
Headquarters of VOCRS was moved from Tsu to Ano, Mie.1986
National Research Institute of Vegetables, Ornamental Plants and Tea (NIVOT) was established, incorporating new Department of Floriculture. Laboratory of Landscaping Plants was founded at Kurume branch at Makurazaki, Kagoshima.1991
Laboratory of Breeding Technology was founded at Ano in place of Laboratory of Landscaping Plants at Kurume.1996
Laboratory of Plant Pathology was founded in Department of Floriculture, NIVOT.2001
National Institute of Floricultural Science (NIFS) was established as one of the institutes of the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO) at Tsukuba, Ibaraki, by reorganization of part of NIVOT.2003
